For those who don't know much about Mario
The Mario Brothers is based on Nintendo's creation from "Mario Bros" from 1983; this game features Mario and his brother Luigi two plumbers from Brooklynn borrows of New York City, who have to defeat creatures emerging from the sewers. The game's second interaction, "Super Mario Bros," had mainly become successful and the flagship of the Nintendo NES console in 1985. Since then, Mario has become one of the most recognizable and beloved video game characters ever.
The Plot
The Movie uses an original plot that sways from the source material's traditional "Save the Princess" structure. Mario and his brother are plumbers who are just trying to make it in Brooklyn, New York, as freelancers, during their attempts at gaining recognition as the "Mario Brother Plumbers." The brothers find themselves being thrown into another world, separated, and it turns out that in this world, there's an evil, fully grown sentient turtle called Bowser, known as a "Koopa," whos attempting to destroy this world new to the characters. With Luigi being split up, he's found and held hostage by the evil tyrant Bowser, leaving the bigger brother Mario to save his beloved sibling. With the help of other notable characters who encompass the expanding universe of Mario, they're aided on their quest to defeat the Koopa King.
Acting? Is a 9.5/10
The Movie's superb acting complements the beautiful visuals, with Jack Black executing his usual goofy and creative musical talent authoritatively. Chris Pratt and Charlie Day truly bring the "Let's a go" catchphrase in a none cringy while bringing a realistic and convincing relationship dynamic between the brothers. Truly convincing the audience of an authentic and loving brotherly bond, to do this via animation visuals with compelling vocals, is challenging, to begin with. You've got Anya Taylor-Joy properly bringing forth a 1 to 1 voice to the Mushroom Kingdom Princess, Peach; she not only enforces the character's badassery but bodies it with her humor. Let us not forget Keegan-Michael Key making us laugh with his random and comedic sprinkle on Toad, Mario's second-hand companion. At first, I couldn't tell whether he was the actor, but I knew whoever played Toad was killing it.
New Era Animation is GORGEOUS
It is worth noting that nowadays, with new adaptations sprinkling into theaters and streaming websites more and more. The visuals have been up to par with the plots and actors involved. The film is BEAUTIFUL. Seeing the fine details on Mario's hats and overalls, almost as if you're zooming in on a Blender render, is truly remarkable. The Visuals stay consistent throughout the movie, tolerable, and not over the top. These animated films must be cut short because their budgets aren't as immense. The film's character faces and how their complementarity fits the voice acting make it hard to ignore. The team behind the visuals deserves a round of applause. If it didn't kill their pockets, I hope they don't decrease in quality, for it reminded me of Riot Games' "Arcane."
Overall Impression?
The all-star cast, including Jack Black, Chris Pratt, and Anya Taylor-Joy, delivered exceptional performances that complemented the beautiful visuals created by the animation team. The attention to detail in character faces, and consistency throughout the movie's visuals are impressive. Overall, the new Mario Brothers movie seems to have exceeded expectations and is a must-watch for fans of the franchise and animation enthusiasts alike.
